“Philadelphia” (1993) is a drama film directed by Jonathan Demme, starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. The story centers on Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks), a successful and openly gay lawyer who is fired from his prestigious law firm after his supervisors discover he has AIDS.

Convinced that his dismissal was due to his sexuality and illness, Beckett decides to sue the firm for discrimination.

Philadelphia lawyer Joe Miller (Denzel Washington), who initially refuses to take the case due to personal biases against homosexuality, is persuaded by Beckett’s determination and courage. As the trial progresses, Joe begins to understand the complexities of Andrew’s life and the prejudice he faces both professionally and personally.

The film explores themes of prejudice, discrimination, and the fight for justice, shedding light on the stigma surrounding AIDS during the early 1990s.

“Philadelphia” is a powerful and moving drama that highlights the challenges of living with AIDS and the need for acceptance and equality. Tom Hanks’ performance earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor, and the film is considered a landmark in raising awareness about AIDS and LGBTQ rights.
